Up Up And Away In My Beautiful Balloon

It is time once again for the annual Spirit Of  Boise Balloon festival We have balloons from several western states at this event.
The birds had to do a pre-festival fly by.

And the first balloon is up in the air ...
What Boise event would be complete without Boise State football making an appearance?
This is the fourth Balloon launch I have been to, I do not understand why the festivals name sake balloon goes up somewhere in the middle. Although he did not want to show his face this year, Mickey Mouse was here once again.
They get into some great formations
This is the first time in three years that we had blue sky for the festival. The last two years the smoke from Forrest fires was pretty thick. The wind was not cooperating this year, they were all coming back down withing either in the same part that they launched from or withing a few blocks. Last year they were landing 20 - 30 miles to the west, almost on the Oregon Border.

My best "Mug Shot" Ever

I find it ironic that the best picture that has ever been taken of me, was taken by someone who has never held a SLR camera in his life.

My boss asked me to take photos of all of our employees for the company web site. I asked fa friend of mine to take my photo. All but three of the photos on our web site are ones that I took. I felt honored to be asked for the job. I even got the manager to smile for a photo. In the eight years I have known Lane I have never seen his smile in a photo. I was able to surprise him, then take the shot.

really! Are You Serious?

We are becoming WAY to reliant on technology!!! In just one generation we have gone from many homes without home phones to people can not go anywhere without a phone. My youngest uncle was born in 1935, his parents had to call the business across the street from their home to get the message about the baby. Now in the event that your phone that is always with you starts to go dead you can charge it at the fair.
Manners and being considerate of others is gone, as well as socializing. While  I was at the car wash today, both bays had cars in them. one bay they were just starting to wash the car, the other bay was occupied when we arrived. the first person finished washing their car, while the person it the other bay had not even started because they were on their cell phone. They were still on the phone when we finished. They occupied a car wash bay for over 20 minutes while people were waiting because they were on the phone.
Yesterday at the fair, there were large groups of friends all together, but not spending time with each other. They were all on their phones. It is pretty bad when the carnies have to tell people they cannot go on the ride unless they hang up the phone.
Maybe I am just old, but I enjoy spending time WITHOUT my phone, what ever it is it can wait until I get home.

Something To Squawk About

What summer would be complete without a Fair

At the fair you will see all kinds of strange chickens,

Photo shared with Skywatch Fiday

And rides as well as fair food.
But most of all you never know when you may win a second place ribbon!!!

This year I decided to enter three photos into the photography competition, one of them won second place!!! I personally think this one is better then the first place winner.

Getting a ribbon in the Idaho State Fair is something I share in common with my wife Nancy's beloved Grandfather. The prize money is about the same as it was in 1916 (adjusted for inflation). Nancy's Grandfather "Pete" has three awards, I guess this means I need to enter more next year to see I can add to my collection. Maybe 95 years from now my grandchildren will be talking about my awards.

Anya wants a playmate

Anya wants a playmate... She figures if she sits on the copier we can replicate her.

Rainbow of colors, plus camera critters

I love this time of year, when the garden starts to give an entire rainbow of colors
My newest neighbor should be with us for the next couple of months, before he begins his long journey to his winter hone in Argentina. He is a juvenile Swanson's Hawk. He LOVES my neighbors half dead tree, he can sit up there and talk for hours.
Enough said, what is it about cats and drawers?

The Only Good Thing About Forrest Fires Is...

The wonderful sunrises
I woke up this morning to a beautiful sunrise. The air quality was awful but we have amazing colors.
The Chickens look forward to wind storms that seem to be part of the summer, it brings down all kinds of good food.

Now That's an Egg!!!

Yesterday Nancy's chickens only laid one egg, but what an egg it was. This egg is as big as my hand, it weighed almost 1/4 of a pound. I am sure the chicken was very happy when it finally came out.

Then and now

The top picture was taken only four months ago. In April the lake was frozen over, and the docks wer empty, just waiting for the thaw.

Now the lake is full of summer fun!

Even the duck are enjoying family time.

The New Kid In Town

With in the last week, we have had a new neighbor. I have seen two pairs of these hawks setting up habitat across the street. There is are two large power pole across the street that does not have any transformers on them. A pair of hawks will sit on top of both poles and talk to each other for hours at a time. Yesterday was the first time that I had good light to photograph this one. I and watched for an hour for the bird to open its wings, fly away etc. It just simply sat on the pole content as could be. There were small bird in the tree ten feet away, the hawk just observed. Most mornings and evenings they are on the poles, during the day they seem to go into the trees. Many times during the daytime we can hear them, but not see them. We have search for the nest, but have not found it yet, probably will not see it until the leaves come off the trees.
 Anything interesting down there?
 Look to the right
 Then to the left
It is getting dark, I think I will move over to the tree.
